It is with great sadness that I report the death of Christine Bell at home on 14th September 2009. Christine had been fighting cancer for some time, and recently received further treatment in hospital. Harvey was admitted to hospital suffering from exhaustion, but Vicky tells me he is now back home with his family. Our thoughts are with them at this sad time.
Christine will be a great loss to the Club and the breed she loved so much. Her knowledge of the breed and showing was enormous. She had awarded challenge certificates in the breed for several years, and had an even longer and very successful show career, making up several champions. Christine made Bedlington history when she won Best in Show at the Paignton Show in 1994 with Ch Reef Knot of Rathsrigg, I believe one of only three Bedlington Terriers ever to take this honour at a general championship show in the UK. She also won the Bitch CC at Crufts in 2002 showing Ch Mollora Destiny at Bluetyke under Alice Emsley. Exhibits from the Bluetyke Kennel were a familiar sight in the show ring.
Christine was at the forefront of the campaign to increase awareness of health issues, particularly the problem of copper toxicosis. As an active member of the Bedlington Terrier Health Group she always lead by example, having her own dogs tested and biopsied to support the research being undertaken by Dr Susan Haywood at Liverpool University and the Animal Health Trust.
Christine was Secretary and Treasurer of MBTC for seven years , and Treasurer for the last two and a half years. Her knowledge and experience were invaluable to me when I took on the role of Secretary. I shall miss her wise counsel and friendship. Dorothy Owen
